1Xtra, Electric Proms @Roundhouse

'Word, Sound, Power' represented 1Xtra's contribution to the landmark Electric Proms, a series of huge, free gigs that saw the likes of James Brown, Basement Jaxx, Jamiroquai, Paul Weller and even The Who play in uniquely intimate venues across the mini-universe that is Camden.

Hosted by Rodney P in the intimate performance studio (just 100 privileged capacity) in the Roundhouse, the diverse event was opened by the wonderful Deadly Hunter & his band, Catch 22. The rising British star (big tings, trust me) impressed with his crisp delivery, infectious energy and conscious lyricism across a breadth of reggae styles. The beautifully bubbling 'Crying' smashed it. Thanks for the heads up Katie.

Skitz entertained on the decks (Slum Village ft Capleton... sick!) before the arrival of the Instrumentals. A versatile string quintet, they captivated the crowd with a deep, contemporary classical sound. Rodney P and Big Chill Recording artist Eva Abraham stepped up midway through the set to perform a couple of inspired tunes, accompanied by epic strings. The contrasting styles of a pensive Rodney P and the edginess of folk singer Abraham complemented each other surprisingly well. Boundary-blurring stuff and essential listening.

An entertaining and educational night was suitably brought to a close by poet Benjamin Zephaniah. With cerebral lyricism and political energy, the dreadlocked luminary unleashed a mix of spoken word and experimental grooves - confronting issues of race, identity and political correctness. A fitting end to a unique night of powerful, diverse music. Thanks to Mikey for sorting the tickets. Roll on Electric Proms '07!
