Imogen Heap @Roundhouse

The Roundhouse, in all its refurbished splendour, was buzzing before the arrival of North London's favourite kooky leftfield artiste. The support act (Arve??) was sensational, coming across like a male Bjork lost in deepest India. He emanated a versatility that saw him singing falsetto, followed shortly by some of the most earth-shuddering bass notes I have ever heard from an instrument. Intense - Snapper, you know what Im saying.

Imogen Heap kicked off proceedings with typical flamboyance, dressed in Halloween gear and riding high above an excited crowd... on a broomstick no less, whilst singing/playing a mini keyboard! This was her biggest UK date yet and she displayed the confidence instilled by her successful USA tours.

That was until Immi suffered the ultimate performer's nightmare; a one woman band relying heavily on a mass of technology... and it all packing up after the 1st tune, rendering the set useless. This unfortunate turn of events threatened to eclipse the show, with the 3000+ audience waiting for over 10 minutes while she turned off and turned it all on 3 times'. Painful viewing. Part of me was praying for her, while the other part was bemused as to how this could happen again (at her enchanting landmark gig @The Bedford). The LED lights flickered on to a resounding cheer, allowing a relieved Ms Heap to continue the show. Naughty Halloween gremlins.

Imogen proceeded to improvise admirably, with particular highlights being the dreamy 'Speeding Cars' and the classic 'Let Go' - the latter stripped down and accompanied by, in a rare moment, Guy Sigsworth (super-producer and other half of Frou Frou). Her performance of 'Just For Now' displayed Imogen at her creative best, deftly layering her own breathless vocals to create an emotional tune, full of character, that used the Roundhouse's stunning acoustics to great effect.

All in all a good, if flawed, gig. Nevertheless there are few people in the scene who could pull off this show with such ambitious skill or quirky charm.

Love to Snapper, Steph, Lady Jo, Skyla & Hustla for reaching Imogen... and all crew who made Killz's birthday a memorable one. BRaaPs x
